Top Photo Tips: Capture Your Summer Memories on the Water

Summertime in Murrells Inlet is pure magic—and if you’re joining us on a Blue Wave Adventures dolphin tour, you’re in for a picture-perfect experience. From playful dolphins gliding alongside the boat to golden sunset skies over the salt marsh, the opportunities to snap incredible photos are endless. But let’s be honest: trying to capture moving wildlife and wriggly kids on a rocking boat can be a challenge! That’s why we’ve gathered our favorite photo tips straight from our captains and crew to help you preserve every splash, smile, and sunset.

Why Photos Matter on a Dolphin Tour

Photos are more than just souvenirs—they’re a way to relive one of your favorite summer memories for years to come. Whether you’re sharing moments on social media or printing them out for a family scrapbook, good photos tell the story of your adventure. And since dolphin tours offer that rare combo of wildlife, natural beauty, and pure joy, it’s worth learning how to do it right.

What to Bring for the Best Photos

Your Smartphone Will Work Just Fine

You don’t need to haul around a fancy DSLR to get great shots. Modern smartphones have powerful cameras that are more than capable of capturing the beauty of Murrells Inlet—and the dolphins too! Just make sure your lens is clean, your settings are on high resolution, and you’ve got enough storage for a couple hundred photos (trust us).

A Waterproof Case is a Must

You’re on a boat, and the water is part of the fun. But water and electronics don’t mix. Bring a waterproof case or dry bag for your phone or camera. Bonus points if it has a strap to keep it secure during those “lean-over-the-rail” moments.

Bring a Lens Cloth or Towel

Between salt spray, sunscreen, and curious little fingers, your lens will need an occasional wipe. Keeping a soft cloth handy can make the difference between a crisp shot and a blurry mess.

Tips for Dolphin Photography

Patience (and Preparation) Pays Off

Dolphins are wild animals—and wild means unpredictable. Our captains know where to find them, but you’ll still need a bit of patience. When we spot a pod, get your camera ready and keep both eyes on the water. Dolphins surface fast, so you’ll want to be set up before the action begins.

Use Burst Mode

One dolphin, one jump, three seconds to catch it all. That’s why burst mode (a rapid-fire series of shots) is your best friend. On iPhones and most Androids, just hold down the shutter button and let your camera do the work. You’ll end up with a sequence of shots—and usually one or two that are frame-worthy.

Zoom with Your Feet (If You Can)

Digital zoom on smartphones can blur your photos. If it’s safe to do so, step closer rather than zooming in. On our boats, you’ll often have room to move—just stay balanced and follow any crew instructions.

Getting Great Family and Group Shots

Let the Light Work for You

Lighting makes or breaks a photo, especially on the water. The best time for photos is early morning or late afternoon—when the sun is softer and golden. But no matter what time your tour is, always try to have the sun behind your photographer (not behind your subjects) to avoid shadows and squinting.

Candid Moments Over Posed

Some of the best photos happen when no one’s looking at the camera. Capture your kids pointing at dolphins, your partner soaking in the views, or a grandparent laughing in the breeze. These are the memories that matter—and they’ll mean more than a forced smile any day.

Ask a Crew Member for Help

Want a full family shot with everyone in it? Our crew is happy to snap a photo for you. Just hand over your phone or camera, and we’ll do our best to get the angle and background just right.

Sunset Photography Tips

Use the Rule of Thirds

Want those dreamy sunset shots? Try the rule of thirds: mentally divide your screen into three equal parts, horizontally and vertically. Place the horizon in the top or bottom third, and let the sky or water dominate the rest. It’s a simple trick that makes your photos look instantly more professional.

Don’t Just Photograph the Sky

A beautiful sunset is great—but a beautiful sunset with your kids watching it or a dolphin leaping beneath it? Even better. Include people, dolphins, or the boat in the foreground to give your photo depth and personality.

Keep Shooting After the Sun Sets

Some of the most colorful skies appear after the sun disappears below the horizon. Keep your phone out—you might catch those deep purples and glowing oranges that only last a few moments.

Extra Tips from Our Captains and Crew

Bring Backup Batteries or a Power Bank

There’s nothing worse than getting halfway through the tour and seeing that dreaded 10% battery warning. Bring a fully charged device and consider a portable power bank—especially if you’re snapping photos nonstop or using video.

Take Some Videos Too

Photos are great, but video captures the sounds and movement of the experience. Shoot a short clip when dolphins swim alongside the boat or when the captain shares cool facts about marine life. These little moments become priceless memories later.

Don’t Forget to Put the Camera Down

This might sound counterintuitive in a blog all about photos—but trust us: take a few great shots, then put your phone down and just be in the moment. Look your kids in the eye. Laugh. Let the wind hit your face. That’s what it’s all about.
