At Blue Wave Adventures, we try to do as much as possible to support our local marine life. Thousands of visitors travel from across the country to experience our Myrtle Beach eco-tours and see the incredible creatures who call our waters home. We’re particularly passionate about dolphins, which is why we’ve rounded up three well-respected dolphin charities for you to check out. RIC O’BARRY’S DOLPHIN PROJECT
For more than 50 years now, Ric O’Barry’s Dolphin Project has had one major goal in mind: ending dolphin exploitation and slaughter. If you’ve seen the Oscar-winning documentary “The Cove,” you’re likely already familiar with the work of the Dolphin Project.
In 2019, the Dolphin Project helped establish the Umah Lumba Rehabilitation, Release and Retirement Center in Bali. This center is the first of its kind in the world! The permanent facility supports formerly captive dolphins and works to keep them healthy and happy for the rest of their days.
You can support the Dolphin Project by donating directly to the cause or by joining their Adopt a Dolphin program.
WHALE AND DOLPHIN CONSERVATION (WDC)
The mission of the Whale and Dolphin Conservation is simple: “to amaze people with the wonder of whales and dolphins and inspire global action to protect them.” The WDC has been striving toward this goal since its founding in 1987.
The WDC operates all over the world, currently running conservation programs in Alaska, Canada, Scotland, West Africa, Hong Kong, and more. If you’d like to support the cause, you can submit a donation, adopt a whale or dolphin, or become a member.
LOWCOUNTRY MARINE MAMMAL NETWORK
This final charity extends its reach far beyond protecting dolphins alone. The Lowcountry Marine Mammal Network (LMMN) is located right here in South Carolina, making this organization particularly special to us at Blue Wave Adventures.
The LMMN is focused on protecting the well-being of marine animals like dolphins, whales, and seals. This group actively responds to calls of injured marine mammals in the area and works to understand and eliminate the threats to their way of life.
Of course, supporters can donate to the LMMN or join the Adopt a Dolphin program. You also have the option to become a Marine Mammal Ambassador, which comes with perks like LMMN swag, early notice of special events, and a unique Ambassador sticker!
WHAT ELSE CAN I DO?
Want to go even further in helping us protect dolphins around the world? One great way to do that is by supporting businesses that are vocal about their conservation efforts. At Blue Wave Adventures, we do our part by supporting dolphin charities on a local, national, and international level. We also work to remove as much trash from our waters as we can and educate guests on our Myrtle Beach eco-tours about their role in wildlife conservation.
