ABOUT THE NATIONAL RESOURCE DEFENSE COUNCIL

The National Resource Defense Council was founded in 1970 by a small group of attorneys and law students spearheading the environmental movement. For the last half-century, their mission has been the same: “NRDC works to safeguard the earth – its people, its plants and animals, and the natural systems on which all life depends.”

The NRDC is unique in its extensive reach across the environmental fight. The organization has hands in vital areas like energy, food, oceans, the wild, climate change, and more. But how does the NRDC actually help? Several ways. Sometimes, they research to move toward solutions to the problems plaguing the planet. In other cases, they may advocate for pro-climate laws and policies.

While the NRDC has the word “national” in its name, its mission actually extends across the globe. Yes, they’ve worked in the USA; for instance, they fought with residents of Dickson, Tennessee, securing their rights to clean water when toxic chemicals were found in the groundwater. But their presence is international; they’ve worked with wildlife in China, clean energy in India, and wildland protections in Latin America.

There’s no question that the NRDC is making huge moves in the environmental fight. But they also provide a plethora of resources for all of us to do our parts. Their website offers helpful guides on every topic from signing petitions against company actions to writing a letter to the editor.
